This past weekend we went and saw Minions. The basic premise of the movie is we follow the minions throughout history trying to find the right evil boss to follow until we reach the 60’s and meet Scarlett voiced by Sandra Bullock.
The best gags were shown in the many trailers that have inundated our family as we’ve watched tv and really the movie is light on actual plot and heavy on stringing gags together. My wife and I were actually kind of bored while watching this movie but Hayden, our seven year old son, loved it.
It’s a shame because Pixar did such a great job with Inside Out this summer appealing to both adults and children and Illumination didn’t deliver on that front. I feel like they did a better job appealing to both with the Despicable Me movies which I enjoyed quite a bit. Maybe it’s the fact that the minions are better left as side characters. Their made up language gets kind of annoying at length where in Despicable Me it was funny in short doses. I will give a shout out to Jon Hamm (STL represent!) who voiced Herb Overkill. I thought he was funny.
Overall I’d say your kids will love it but you will be bored but with very limited options for families over the summer you might just want something to do and you could do worse.
